Senior Product Designer, Toronto, Canada
I was always creative as a kid but didn’t actually pursue a creative career right out of school. After school I spent 2 1/2 years studying marketing and did some odd freelance design jobs to earn some money. After a while I realized I preferred design and decided to go all in on it. I dropped marketing and went to design school in Dublin before moving to London for a year to study there. While in London I started doing small jobs for local businesses with a friend that eventually led to some web design work using Adobe Dreamweaver (old school I know). Through this I discovered my love for designing for the web and this opened up so many opportunities for learning Interaction Design, UX, Business Strategy etc. When I moved back to Dublin in 2014 I landed a role at startup called Soundwave working on their iOS and Android apps. I learned a lot about Product Design there. Since then I've worked across multiple industries including Travel, Advertising and Fin-Tech. I'm now a member of Shortcut's growing design team and love working here!
I’m not much of a morning person so usually wake up around 8:30 and make coffee or walk to a local coffee shop to pick some up. I get back to my desk around 9am and start the day light by catching up on Slack messages, emails and any comments I have to respond to in Shortcut. After that it's usually meetings and design work for the rest of the day. Sometimes I take a screen break and go an a mid afternoon walk to get some fresh air.
In my spare time I like playing football (soccer in North America 😄). I play competitively twice per week which is great because I’m not much of a gym person so it gives me good exercise and there’s a social element to it too, which is nice. I also like to play video games, go for dinner and drinks with friends, catch the odd movie and I like looking for restaurants where I can try new foods. Toronto is a great city for that because it’s so multicultural. You can find a dish from pretty much anywhere in the world! I also love travelling and exploring new places and bringing a camera with me. Hopefully I’ll get more of a chance to do that when the pandemic is over.
I generally keep my desk pretty tidy. This is what happened to be on it when I took the photo.
I don’t have a specific genre of music I listen to. I could go from listening to 90s hip-hop to electronic to pop in the space of a few minutes. I have no idea why that is, I just never found myself drawn to one specific genre over another. If it’s a good song, it’s a good song in my opinion.
A random selection of songs I had to pick quickly that aren't terrible.
Pain
The War On Drugs
5:31
Somebody Told Me
The Killers
3:17
Have A Nice Day
Stereophonics
3:25
Red Eyes
The War On Drugs
4:59
Probably an owl. I’m not much of a morning person and definitely function better as the day goes on. I also tend to stay up late most nights (probably explains not being a morning person).
